Mangroves

Mangrove are the tropical plant group species that live in the coastal intertidal zone. They are adopted to grow in wet soil and salty water generally submerged by tides. They are generally found in two types of root system: Prop and Knee roots. Prop roots originates from the trunk of the tree whereas knee roots are finger like projections, called pneumatophores. Mangroves act as a storm defender by reducing wind and wave action. They not only provide the most crucial food resources to the marine organism but also serve as important breeding places to the many aquatic animals. Sindhudurg coast covers around 6940Ha. of a mangrove area, and harbours the richest mangrove species diversity in Maharashtra. Moreover, mangrove ecosystem is known as the most productive ecosystem in South Konkan.
